Grace Reed and Walter Fairchild were married October 25,1920 and through the years their family grew. Their children: Walter Reed (deceased), Eda Virginia, Doris, Vonda, Carol, Larry, and Nancy; including son-inlaws, a daughter in-law, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, grandchildren in-laws, great-grandchildren in-laws, step grandson, and an assortment of step great-grandchildren. All were welcome into their large family, and it fact it had been once said that Grace and Walter were truly the Norman Rockwell version of Grandpa and Grandma.
When it came time to feed the family, it was rumored that Grace could serve six people at dinner with one can of Spam and fancy it up with a brown sugar glaze. Walter would often say with a smile and a twinkle in his blue eyes, "Come for dinner and we'll throw another potato in the pot." No one ever went away hungry at a family event as Grace served up the best food with a lot of pride from her garden and pantry. Today at our reunions we continue the legacy and no one ever goes away hungry.
Through the years, there were always reunions of some type at Walter and Grace's house at 1140 School Avenue. Whether it be a birthday party or an anniversary, we all tried to gather no matter where we lived. Not only did Grace and Walter's children and grandchildren gathered together, but also many of their nephews and nieces joined in. After Walter, our father and grandfather, died on January 11, 1985, Grace eventually left the family home and downsized.
In 1991 we formed a family reunion which has now turned into a weekend camp-out every three years. Grace, our mother and grandmother, died March 11, 2003. It was her wish that we continue our reunions.
The Fairchild Family Reunion blog will be a source of information about our reunions and our journeys.
